A Day Late

Not from the fields of Flanders but nevertheless in grateful memory for the soldiers who fought and died to liberate Belgium.

Until we visited the World War I (the Great War) battlegrounds and cemeteries last year, we really didn't understand the enormity of that war and its devastating impact on Belgium. I think American history books devote more pages to the second World War.

What a beautiful tribute. Growing up I always remember artificial poppies being sold so that we wore the poppy on 11/11. I haven't seen that in years. Thank you for the posting and reminder.

bonjour - I too visited Yper and it was amazing. I have a new outlook on veterans day and memorial day since living here. Too bad it will end soon.

Jill, has Joe received marching orders out of Belgium?

I just got your very sweet note and thankfully I am much better. I fell at church so it made quite a stir (got tangled in my pant's leg). It was somewhat embarrassing that I fled with a bloody noise but it was kind that the priest, church secretary and several parishioners called to check on me. In the future I will try to be more graceful and go a bit slower to prevent another spill. I will also be much more compassionate for those who have fallen. Thank you again for your nice note.

This field was truly awesome wasn't it ? I guess we both must have stood in the same spot. xx
